Brooke Asbury (BS Geology, 2001; MS Geology, 2003)
Engineering Geologist in Seattle, Washington
I'm a Project Manager at GeoEngineers. I do a variety of field work and project management. I work on a lot of projects studying geohazards with respect to future or existing buried pipelines. I monitor landslides, design stream restoration projects, and design landslide stabilization projects along petroleum products pipelines. I am beginning to work on design of Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) installations for pipelines (including path design and hydrofracture anyalysis), which may take me out of the country on projects in the future. I do a variety of field work, including drilling, pipeline installation monitoring, and geohazard reconnaissance. I also write proposals, design reports, and invoices.
I love my job. There is a wide variety, yet I feel fortunate to have found a nitch that allows me to do a significant amount of field work, work with data and reports, manage my own projects, and interact with clients. I enjoy everyone that I work with. I work with very talented and down-to-earth people. I also enjoy learning about the engineering side of our work by working with our geotechnical engineers.
CWU Geology prepared me for technical writing, as I am always writing reports which seem like mini-theses. Past geology courses helped me pass the LG test. I also draw cross sections a lot. :)
I still love working for GeoEngineers with plenty of projects for Olympic Pipe Line with respect to landslides and creek restoration (mainly grade control structures in creeks to raise cover over the pipeline - increasing scour due to floods).
More exciting is that since August of 2008, I play fiddle in an Alt-Country/folk-rock band in Seattle. We play around Ballard at the Tractor, Conor Byrne, the Sunset, etc. with a Europe tour planned for November. The band is called Legendary Oaks. And the best news is that I have a band romance to boot - I am dating the bass player who is the best guy in the whole world.
I live in Seattle (Wallingford/Fremont area) in a condo with my dog, Jackson, and room mate/friend. I spend my free time: drinking coffee, hanging out with my best friends (from Ellensburg!), running marathons, dancing, karaokeing, practicing ballet and fiddle, attending the Ellensburg Rodeo, eating pho, riding my vespa, backpacking, going to rock-and-roll shows, and doing other totally awesome things, of course.
