Logistics and Food Information
Trips are 1-2 days long, some with overnight camping. The department will provide large group water containers, one or two coolers, and a propane stove (large enough to make meals for all participants), plus some pots and pans. Camping grear is required; bring a tent, a sleeping bag, etc. Also bring "normal" field gear such as hammer, hand-lens, field notebook, hat, sunglasses, sun screen, field boots and water bottles. Make sure to bring wind- and rain-gear on the Mt. St. Helens trip. The Yakima River Canyon trip will be a rafting trip. Wear clothing and shoes that can get wet; bring extra set of dry clothes. Life jackets and dry bags will be provided.
Food Groups
Everyone is responsible for their own food for lunch. Space will be limited, so pack
accordingly.
We will have group breakfasts and dinners. Cooking groups will be formed at our initial meeting, and each will be responsible for one breakfast and one dinner. Save your receipts from group food shopping. You will be reimbursed, but only with receipts (please try to choose economical meals). Plan on cooking for the entire group.
Plan on dinners such as burritos, spaghetti, and maybe chili. Make something that is easy to cook in the field but try to avoid processed foods.
Logistics
Plan to share a tent as this will help with space. The transport of alcoholic beverages in State vehicles
is prohibited. In preparation for the trips, the individual trip leaders will assign papers or other handouts for you to read. These will either be posted on the course website, distributed at the initial planning meeting, or distributed on the day of the trip. Check your e-mail regularly to catch relevant messages. Your first meeting will be with Dr. Lisa Ely on Friday 9/7 at 10:00 AM in LIND Hall room 103.
While you have a writing assignment to complete for this course (see syllabus) the main goal is for you to meet one another and the faculty, and see some spectacular Washington geology.
If you have any questions at all, please e-mail
Lisa Ely at ely@cwu.edu.
