Environmental Geosciences/Climate Change Position Announcement

The Department of Geological Sciences at Central Washington University invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Environmental Geosciences/Climate Change to begin in September 2008.

  • Responsibilities

    This tenure-track position in Environmental Geosciences/Climate Change will respond to student and regional needs in the growing career and research discipline of environmental geosciences, and will augment our increasing instructional and research programs in these areas. Applicants in all areas of research in Environmental Geosciences/Climate Change are invited to apply. The successful candidate will contribute to current departmental instruction in the Environmental Geological Sciences and Geology Major programs and potentially the interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Program through a subset of the following courses: Stratigraphy, Environmental Geology and Natural Hazards, Oceans and Atmosphere, Environmental Studies, introductory geology courses, and upper division courses in their specialization. The specific course assignments will depend on the successful candidate’s area of expertise. Potential research subdisciplines include, paleoclimatology, biogeochemical cycles, climate dynamics, Quaternary sedimentology/stratigraphy or other related disciplines. The faculty member is expected to contribute to the department's efforts to recruit undergraduate majors, play an active role in departmental and campus activities, advise and mentor undergraduate and M.S. graduate students in research and other scholarly activities, and seek external funding for programs that further the mission and goals of the Department of Geological Sciences.

  • Required Qualifications

    Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in geological sciences or related field by the start date. The successful applicant must show potential to be an excellent teacher at all levels, and to develop a research program in his/her area of expertise that is conducive to the involvement of students.

  • Department and University Information

    Central Washington University is a comprehensive state university that serves over 9,000 students by offering undergraduate and masters degrees. The Geological Sciences Department has approximately 85 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate students. The department is composed of a dynamic and enthusiastic group of 9 tenure-track faculty who maintain active, diverse, and internationally recognized research programs in which undergraduate and MS graduate students participate. The department houses clean, stable isotope and general geochemistry laboratories, a Philips PW 3400 Powder X-Ray Diffractometer, ThermoElemental X-series inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, and ThermoFinnigan DeltaPlus XP gas source mass spectrometer. Other facilities include the Pacific Northwest Geodetic Array (PANGA), the GPS Geodesy Laboratory, GIS computer facilities, digital surveying equipment, Nikon and Leica petrographic microscopes and a research polarizing reflected and transmitting light microscope with CCD-video camera.

    Central Washington University is in the town of Ellensburg, population 15,000, which provides one of the finest living environments in the Pacific Northwest. Ellensburg, located in Kittitas Valley, is only minutes from Wenatchee National Forest and a two-hour drive from Seattle over the spectacular Cascade Mountains.
