Yakima Herald: Memories and
Lessons from Mount St. Helens
The Yakima Herald spoke with CWU's Nick Zentner about the eruption of Mount St. Helens 40-years ago, and the changes in the geologic sciences and hazards communities since the event. Research beginning a decade prior the catastrophic 1980 eruption by geologist Dwight Raymond "Rocky" Crandell was passed on to Nick Zentner and adds to the complex story of volcano monitoring before and after an eruption. Changes in technology such as gps and other forms of remote sensing decrease the human hazards, but large populations are still in close proximity to many active volcanoes that will erupt in the future.
