Course Description

GEOL 101 provides an introduction to geologic processes that control Earth processes, emphasizing the origin and nature of the common rocks, and the continually changing features of the earth's crust.

Class Expectations

Attendance is required for all lectures. Reading the text is not a sufficient substitute. If you do miss a class, ask a classmate to give you notes and an explanation of those notes. Expect to spend 2 hours out of class for every hour in class (I am serious).

You should be on time, prepared, and ready to listen and participate for the full 50 minutes of each class. Come to class on time.; do not leave early.

Take good notes. Write down everything on the board, make sketches of slides and overheads, and get all the details. Take notes during all slides and videos, you are responsible for the material covered.

Assignments should be neat and completed on time.

The appropriate chapters should be read before lecture, be careful not to get behind.

You are responsible for the material presented in reading assignments, lectures, and slides/videos. If you have questions, it is your responsibility to ask during class time or during office hours. I encourage you to ask questions in class, come to my office hours, or send me questions on e-mail.

Student learning objectives

Develop an understanding of:

  • The scientific method
  • Internal structure of the Earth
  • Plate tectonics and the formation of geologic structures, topographic features, and the major classes of rocks
  • Earth materials, from atoms to minerals to rocks to plates
  • Processes and products of the rock cycle; weathering, erosion, and the origins of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks
  • Principles and techniques of relative and numeric dating, and the geologic time scale
  • Factors that shape Earth's crust; stress and deformation (e.g., folds, faults, and earthquakes)
  • The hydrologic cycle as it relates to streams, groundwater, and glaciers.

Student with disabilities

Students with disabilities who wish to set up academic adjustments in G101 should give me a copy of their ÒConfirmation of Eligibility for Academic AdjustmentsÓ from the Disability Support Services Office as soon as possible so we can discuss how the approved adjustments will be implemented in this class. Students without this form should contact the Disability Support Services Office, Bouillon 205 or dssrecept@cwu.edu or 963-2171.
