Structural Geology: Examination 3 Review
The most important activity for you to do to prepare for the examination
is read and understand your class notes and required textbook. You should be able, without
referring to your notes, to answer all of the questions in this study guide.
Exam 3 is a bit more challenging than the last two exams.
Faulting
- Determining normal or reverse faults using age of strata, dip of
fault and fault striate - similar to exam 2.
Contractional mountain belts: folding
- Folds, geometry, shape, styles, and tightness.
- Understanding the differences between cylindrical and non-cylindrical folds
- Relations of asymmetric folds to large scale structure
- Relations of cleavage and folds
Stereogrpraphic projection
- Planes, lines and rake
- Relations between axial surface and hinge line
- Lines, planes, and rake
- Fault plane and rake of lineation
- Stereographic projections and relations: hinge lines and axial surfaces of folds
Cross-sections
- Construct cross-section using bedding-cleavage relations
- Construct cross-section using foliation and small-scale folds (s and z folds)
Deformation
- Differences between ductile and brittle deformation in rocks w/examples
