Glide avalanches and equipment installation

Potential runout of large avalanche events threatens the groomed ski runs below rockface.

Spring, 2002; view to the east
A small part of the snowpack failed in spring, 2004. Compression along the right flank and a shallow snowpack likely prevented
the entire slab from releasing. Glide rate was not collected during this event, although meteorlogical and seismic data
collection was successful.

Rock Face, looking west.
The right flank (viewer's left) provides compressive support to the gliding snow, which may delay the release of the slope.
The main area of compression is not visible in this photo.
Composite photograph following a glide avalanche
on 1/16/04. About 44.5 mm of rain was recorded prior to the avalanche. A small protion of the snowpack did not release, although snow
did glide and avalanche over the intact snow.

Post failure scenario at Rock Face.
The snow picket at the end of the cable transducer will release during failure. Otherwise, the transducer will be damaged.
