What aspects of the teaching or content of this course do you feel were especially good?

  • Mr. Rubin was very knowledgeable in this field and did a good job of explaining things. It helps me a lot when he puts the notes/slideshows on the internet.
  • I liked how Rubin put his lectures online which made it easy for those who did miss class or not catch something to get it.
  • Loved how he would slow down on slides when asked. He really cared about students opinions.
  • The explanations, overheads, instructors notes on line
  • Used good examples to illustrate concepts
  • Prof. Rubin was great. I wish that I would have had him the whole quarter.
  • Followed his powerpoints and told us clearly what would be on the test
  • I loved the excitment the instructor had every class.
  • Rubin was pretty enthusiastic and knowledgeable about geology. Straightforwardness about tests and grading was useful.
  • Explainations were clear.
  • It's about rocks. Rocks are rad.
  • Charlie's enthusiasm makes coming to class worth it. He is obviously knowledgeable and is great with explaining concepts in a way that everyone can understand.
  • He was enthusiastic and seemed to care if we understood the material. It helped me stay focused in class and actually learn.
  • Very well laid-out lectures.
  • He was really enthusiastic. Once you got used to him it was an enjoyable class. I have a new appreciation for geology now. This part made a lot more sense than the first half of the quarter. Having the powerpoints online was great & he was easy to say wait go back to.
  • Although he talks fast at times, he leaves enough time to take notes on the key points. Then later look them up in the reading
  • Charlie Rubin was a very motivated professor who made the subject more interesting and listen. I felt that he is very friendly, and this probably have reflected many students in class.
  • I really like the drill after finishing a topic. It really helped cement the concept into my brain. I like that I could access PowerPoint presentations! I like the way Rubin shared his professional/personal experiences Ð it made it easier to understand the concept presented.
  • I liked Charlie's enthusiasm and the example he would incorporate from his own experiences. They made it much more enjoyable.
  • The class was fine, but there's interestings only so much that can be said about rocks.
  • Charlie is very diligent & enthusiastic,
  • Very good at summarizing/reviewing the material we just went over. Offered examples of possible test questions. Related info. to real world by telling real stores about experiences.

  • The online powerpoints really helped with studying for the exams.
  • Really good textbook
  • Nice to not have tons of assignments to do
  • He was very informative on how the tests will be organized & what to expect. I never knew about the geo website until Rubin, which was very helpful
  • Instructor always made sure students understood the material, used multiple examples, reviewed at the end of every period. There is no reason to not understand material if a person attended class.
  • Teacher was very knowledgeable & enthusiastic. Even though he talks very fast, the information was very repetitive. Having the powerpoint online was very helpful, to go back and review, or print ahead of time. very clear explanations, I actually understood you went over topics multiple times testing was fair really helpful, knowledgeable the teacher was so enthusiastic & educated himself on the topic it actually made geology interesting

  • Very knowledgeable of topic.
  • I could definitely tell that Rubin was knowledgeable and passionate about his Field of study. He was a nice guy, always willing to help.
  • Professors interest in subject. Other than that I did not like this class or when Melborn was teaching it.
  • Awesome course even though it was only an elective for me
  • The powerpoint was displayed very well.
  • Applied issues to our lives well

What changes could be made to improve learning in this course?

  • Extra credit possibilities I don't like how all our grade is based on tests and quizes.
  • Bring dry-erase markers to class!
  • Slow it down.
  • I did not like having two different teachers. It was difficult switching teachers in the middle of the quarter.
  • The way the powerpoints were presented. Should be more organized that's how I lost intrest in class.
  • Slow down post grades online
  • I would not have split the class & had two profs. I feel that the first half of the class was waisted w/ the first prof.
  • A little fast at times but was open to slow down
  • I think the amount of homework, i.e. readings, were to much for a 101 course.
  • NEVER split the class between 2 teachers it sucked and I think ruined my grade and the effectivness of the class.
  • The course is good enough
  • Instructor often covered material too fast.
  • He needs to give more time on each slide, and talk slower.
  • I would have had just one teacher teach it instead of two (Charley)
  • I really liked the way he teachers, possibly slow down his speed of his speech.
  • SLOW DOWN Ð LOTS OF NEW CONCEPTS FOR SOME PEOPLE give us time to absorb the information.
  • I would have liked to see more material covered. We moved quickly from slide to slide but most slides had the same material. If there was more in depth info I may have been more interested/challenged but the content was too redundant - he moves through stuff fast, but itÕs the same 5 points over & over & overÉ -tell use which chapter you are covering (it did not always seem to match the syllabus). - Build up the concept before whizzing through the examples (ask us questions to see if we understand the basic concept yet). ÐRemove some of the info. from your slides you can bring your own extra notes if you need them for yourself, but we donÕt need to see all those words. Keep in mind: we need to read through the slide in order to pick out important info. That takes a while when there are paragraphs on the slides.
  • Nothing
  • I like it better when we have one instructor through out the course.
  • Moves kind of fast at times.
  • He seemed to go through lecture really fast
  • Don't split up the teaching, that was weird
  • Different book, the info wasn't presented well in the textbook.
  • Maybe some sort of student involvement
  • Sometimes too fast slow down a bit
  • This is the 2nd time I've taken a class w/ Melbourne/Rubin & the syllabus' class schedule of events is never correct. I wish we had extra credit opportunities. Ask if anyone has questions before moving on, take time to pause and then move on so every one can catch up For the love of god, slow down. Rapid speed writing denies me a chance to understand the material Spoke too fast. Tests were very difficult. Even with much preparation using his review. Tests were more specific rather than overview of topics covered. Much too difficult for a 101 class. SLOW DOWN! ITS NOT A RACE! The tests were extremely difficult, and no way reflect the study guide. In the future, narrow down the study guide reasonably.
  • I strongly disliked having 2 teachers. I also thought it was poor that both Rubin & Melborn do not use slide shows appropriatly. Switching to quickly w/only the explanations that we do not have to write everything down. Made notes unorganized. I also think reports/assignments are needed.
  • The one change would be, to not go so fast through the notes.
  • None, except you go fast
  • Go slower.
  • Talked/lectured too fast, amount of information on test was too excessive
  • Test over less information
  • -too fast pace Ðc over material w/ more detail & easier to understand.
  • Slow down during slides
  • Slow down a little
  • He needs to slow down a little bit, and don't rush through the slides.
  • You teach the entire quarter.
  • None. Really enjoyed class.
  • More quiz
  • More note taking rather than listening and trying to remember everything for the test.
  • None
  • Only put important things on the slides & things on the tests.
  • Don't have tim teach it! Just Charlie.
