What aspects of the teaching or content of this course do you feel were especially good?

  • I feel that the way you teach w/reviewing after going through the slides very fast really helped. Homework also helped.
  • The power point was great with picture and graphs to explain complex ideas. Dr. Rubin's great personality made it easier to follow what he was saying. You are great. Thank you!!!
  • Sometimes you went quickly through slides but you were always willing to give us more time with the slide when we asked. Not monotonous. You get excited about it and that energy was contagious. I also loved the seminars (I attended 4) and really appreciated the problem sets. They helped me to better understand the concepts and allowed for some non-test points.
  • This course was great! (minus the lab). Instructor was friendly, enthusiastic, and understanding. Though a tad difficult for a 100-level intro course, still good. Really developed an appreciation for the field.
  • You went through material quickly so it really helps when you review the important points.
  • I thought Dr Rubin really enjoys what he teaches and always made everything interesting.
  • I could clearly tell that the instructor knew and understood the material thourughly.
  • The teacher was very enthusiastic while teaching. It really helped me by him using power point.
  • All
  • The power point presentations were so helpful Dr. Rubin used tons of graphics that helped explain the material.
  • Great instructor
  • What to study, telling us how things worked with examples.
  • I thought his power point slides were very well organized. It provided just the right information so things didnŐt get confusing.
  • He had so many pictures and examples that it made it really easy to learn.
  • I loved how excited he was about his work and how clearly the information was stated (power point)
  • I liked the power point. Showed good examples of elements.
  • The instructor was very helpful and cared whether or not we learned. He was always willing to help in any way possible. I generally hate science, but I truly enjoyed this class.
  • Good instructor
  • He always related it to real world issues
  • He knew his stuff
  • Overheads, note taking
  • I really liked the way he teached. He showed a real interest toward geology and that made me enthusiastic about it.
  • He knew what he was talking about and he could explain it in a general and knowledable way (so we could understand)
  • The homework assignments helped me understand what was going on in class.
  • Very good
  • Using power point & the different diagrams were helpful. Also its good to have an SI in this class. It helped a lot.
  • Great enthusiasm!
  • Great lectures and pictures
  • The way material was presented

What changes could be made to improve learning in this course?

  • I think you are an awesome professor and you donŐt need to slow down, people just need to learn what to write down.
  • Maybe less material but more in depth
  • Slow down & if you say the info isn't important don't put it on the slides.
  • More timely response with tests and homework.
  • Needs to slow down when talking, if using overhead put stuff that is important, not extra stuff because we donŐt know what to write down.
  • Move slower through lecture
  • Went a little fast (speech-too fast)
  • Lab not necessary
  • Slow down when teaching material.
  • Slow down on lecture
  • This is a 101 class not a 401, Prof. made it very difficult to really do well in the class.
  • He needs to slow down during lectures. It's nearly impossible to keep up.
  • He could slow down!!
  • Still too fast on power point, but tried to slow down. Didn't always acknowledge students wanting to ask questions. My hand was raised but never called on me.
  • Go a little slower. Maybe have some more visual experiments, or more live demonstrations.
  • Charlie said in the beginning of the quarter how fast he went and I agree he needs to slow down.
  • Slow down, moves too quickly
  • He needs to slow down on his lectures.
  • My hand hurts after every classÉstill show it down a bit.
  • Recap more on the important stuff. Its easy to get lost in the power points.
  • Sometimes goes to fast w/lecture, but Charlie already knows this.
  • Rubin should really consider staying on each slide for at least 20 seconds for each point! I scambled so much during note taking that it was hard to absorb the material!!!
  • None - maybe test.
  • The material needs to be taught more slowly still is too fast to get all information.
  • Going a little bit slower when you are talking. Sometimes you would switch slides before I was finished writing.
  • I always thought that it was never quite clear what notes were needed to be taken down for tests.
  • bit difficult for a 100-level course. VERY FAST (bold that). Sometimes (many times) information was missed because of pacing. Sure made it exciting though.
  • Nothing!
  • Slow down when you talk, but you already know that.
  • I think you are an awesome professor and you don't need to slow down, people just need to learn what to write down.
