Carl Matzek (MS Geology, 2013)

I'm currently working at XTO Energy, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil in Houston Texas as a Petroleum Geoscientist. I use my subsurface geologic mapping to integrate with drilling engineers, regulatory, and local governments to plan and execute drilling. I'm also responsible for steering the wellbore during the horizontal section to hit our target interval. In addition to drilling I am responsible for taking well performance data to assess trends within plays to monitor/integrating industry activity in the area, so I can integrate those findings back into planning of future wells.

My life "plan" changed dramatically after taking the Intro to Petroleum course taught by Winston my first year of graduate school. I immediately fell in love with the industry and the cutting edge technology that we use on a daily basis to provide the world's energy supply.
